It is our mission that every young person, ages 6-18 has an opportunity to be creative,
have fun and grow in an understanding of who he or she is!
CUMC is offering workshops in 5-week sessions in various categories,
including, music, visual arts, dance, theater arts and writing.
Each class will showcase their talent during a Sunday morning worship or related activity.

Little Preludes (Keyboard Lessons)

Monday & Tuesday 4:30 PM

This class meets on MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS from 4:30 to 5:00 PM. THIS 2-DAY SESSION COUNTS AS 1 WORKSHOP.

Ages: All ages

Class Limit: 5 participants

Leader: Naoko Kawashima

Children of all ages will learn basic music theory and how to play basi music with both hands.

This class is for children who have no previous experience playing the piano. Parents can learn to play with their children as well. During the 5-week class, participants will learn to play two selections and will play as an ensemble in Sunday morning worship.

Ms. Kawashima is a graduate of the Musashino Musical University in Japan and a faculty member of the Ottley Music School in Hyattsville since 2008. She has served as an accompanist for Morgan State University in Baltimore since 2016.

Creative Expression: Act Like You Know (Drama)

This class meets on WEDNESDAYS from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

Ages: 13-18

Class Limit: 20 participants

Leader: Julian Ivey

Participants will explore drama.

Julian is a product of Cheverly UMC. He was a member of the Cheverly Young Actors Guild. He has performed on Broadway in “The Lion King.”

 

I Wanna Sing (Choir)

This class meets on WEDNESDAYS from 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM.

Ages: 10-12

Class Limit: 20 participants

Leader: Mrs. Nancy Wood

CUMC Children's Choir Alumnae are invited to sing again with old and new friends.

Mrs. Nancy Wood returns to cultivate a joy of singing. On Wednesday afternoons during Children's Choir practice, middle schoolers will meet to learn three different songs. One will be a praise song; one will be a spiritual; and one will be an adaptation of a folk tune. We will explore aspects of vocal technique such as breath support, phrasing, intonation, and interpretation. Come join us!

The Daily Drum

This class meets on WEDNESDAYS from 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM.

Ages: 6-12

Class Limit: 20 participants

Leader: Aaron Ivey

Throughout the ages, drums have been used to communicate messages in the community.

This drumming class will teach the basics of rhythm, especially those common in African and African-American cultures. There will be a focus on how simple rhythms can be combined in order to create more interesting patterns. By the end of the course, participants should be able to keep time and play basic solos with band accompaniment.

The Creative Pen (Writing)

This class meets on SUNDAYS from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

Ages: 13-18

Class Limit: 20 participants

Leader: Dr. Ruth King

Words have power to communicate dreams, ideas, and possibilities.

Each person has a hidden writer within. Dr. Ruth King will work with teens to help them write their stories. By the end of the class, each participant will have learned how to express their imagination and write effectively.

Dr. King is a self-published author of the The Only One and Mystery in Trilogy, and a retired Human Relations trainer.
